With that in mind, here are four of the top sustainable building trends you should be on the lookout for in 2021.

Green Energy

One of the most popular construction trends that make homes sustainable is a shift to using green, renewable energy. Instead of incorporating traditional energy sources, more builders are looking for ways to create sustainable homes powered by either solar, hydro, or wind energy. Furthermore, new construction homes are being designed with energy efficiency to help homeowners cut down on their utility bills. This includes using Energy Star kitchen appliances, dual-pane windows, and energy-efficient construction methods that save power.

Renewable Building Materials

Research has found that traditional building materials have chemicals in them that can be harmful to humans. Thus, homeowners are more conscious of these adverse effects and health hazards and prefer to know precisely where the building materials were sourced from and what ingredients they contain. This results in sustainable building materials like low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints when renovating or building new homes. Not only are these materials healthier, but they are also more environmentally friendly and work to reduce a homes’ carbon footprint.

Water Conservation Measures

As building methods progress, we’re seeing an evident rise in trying to address better water management practices. Recent wildfires in Australia and California have underscored the importance of restricting water usage and practicing conservation. Now, builders are opting to use more water-conserving fixtures and low-flow toilets, installing low-flow showerheads and water-permeable surfaces as well as stormwater management strategies. Some builders are even incorporating rainwater catchment systems, gray water recovery systems, and installing green roofs!

Mass Timber Panels

Another construction trend that’s working to make homes more sustainable is Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and Mass Timber Panels. Builders are using these more frequently to replace metal and solid wood as structural beams. This trend helps preserve natural resources and old-growth trees. Mass Timber Panels are made from post-industrial waste wood and smaller dimension trees from logging that are typically too small for commercial use.

Whether you’re currently a homeowner or you’re thinking about purchasing a property, it is hard to ignore the fact that an energy-efficient home is beneficial to all and worth the investment.
