Winter has arrived, bringing snow and colder temperatures. Although the sun sets earlier in the winter months, and the weather is not always sunny, winter does not need to be the season where your family hunkers down and disappears until spring. Oshawa Tim Hortons’ Holiday Free Skates 

Every year, as a part of the holidays, Tim Hortons stores across Canada sponsor ice time for families to go skating completely free of charge. This year, the city of Oshawa will be hosting 5 free family skates over the holidays. Grab your skates, helmets, and mittens, and spend a few hours leisurely skating around with your family. Hit the Slopes in Bowmanville

If your family craves adventure, with fresh air and fun, take them out for a day of skiing and snowboarding at Brimacombe Mountain. The hill has over 20 trails to choose from, a ski school for beginners, and 2 terrain parks for the more advanced skiers. Spend the day hitting the slopes, then bring your family inside one of the two chalets to warm up by the fire, while sipping hot chocolate and recounting their adventures from the day. It’s the perfect way to be outside in the fresh air, while having fun with your family, and it’s only a 19 minute drive from Bowmanville.

Winter Fun at Mountsberg

Hidden in the natural beauty that surrounds the Milton area is the family friendly Mountsberg Farm, part of the Halton Conservation Authority. The park features a full petting zoo for kids, sleigh rides, a play barn, and live birds of prey shows. Spend the day in the outdoors with your family, then warm up with a hot chocolate around a campfire at the Mountsbeg Conservation Area.  

Kids’ Crafts at the Automotive Museum

In anticipation of the winter break, the Canadian Automotive Museum in Oshawa is offering Kids’ Crafts and activities, including card making, and ornament decorating. The events are free with admission to the museum and are the perfect way to spend one of the more miserable days enjoying creative fun with your kids and family. The museum also features the largest display of Canadian made vehicles, and a kid-friendly Lightning McQueen display.

Tobogganing

One of the many advantages of living in the Milton area is that the geographical landscape provides fantastic conditions for tobogganing and sliding.  Take your family out to Sixteen Mile Creek (located at Commercial and Laurier) or the Glen Eden Tube Park for some fast paced, good old fashioned sliding. The day out in the fresh air will banish your family’s winter blues, and bring smiles to everyone’s face.
