We all have that one thing in our living room that bothers us. Maybe it is excessive amounts of trinkets with nowhere to put them, or maybe it is the layout of the furnishings, but regardless of what your living room woes may be, it bothers you day in and day out. That is what we are here for! Here are some designer tips on how to create a perfectly styled living room and transform your “woes” into “wows”.

Stylish Storage:

Do you have too many trinkets and books lying around? Today’s trend in the living room is to navigate away from the traditional bookcase and replace it with a stylish shelf with tasteful fabric boxes to hide anything you may not want on display. As an added bonus, you can choose boxes that compliment the colours in the room! Other storage ideas include a tiered coffee table, ottomans, and nesting tables.

Use a Colour Accent:

According to HGTV’s Emily Henderson, using one bold colour throughout the living room in moderation brings everything together. This can be accomplished by choosing a cushion that compliments the colours in the room, or painting a desk chair to match the colour scheme in the room. Combining colours like dark blue with grey and olive creates a laid back atmosphere and brings it all together, like the living room in the image below.

Mix it up:

If your style is eclectic, embrace it by using diverse furniture and accent pieces, but keep it grounded by arranging the room in a symmetrical way. Use a doorway or a window as a main focal point by decorating symmetrically around it using built in shelving with similar pieces on the shelves, or by hanging similar picture frames above the doorway. Keeping the decor similar on both sides of the doorway will frame the view into the next room.

Combine Rustic with Modern:

By combining modern furniture and white walls with contrasting barn board decor or wooden beams, you can create an airy, yet cozy feel to your living room. Use a rustic, worn coffee table as an accent, or if you have a fireplace, have a wooden mantle installed as a central focal point. Mixing the wooden accents with the white walls will make your living room a comfortable place to entertain your guests.

Serenity inspired:

If you are looking for a minimalist approach for your living room, combine dark flooring or accent rugs with white furniture in varying shades. The contrast between the flooring and your furniture will leave your living room with a polished, serene look. Add in a bit of greenery, and your living room will be a room filled with peace and tranquility.
