Spring is here.   The daffodils and crocuses are popping through the muddy, frozen ground, the redbuds are radiating from their branches, and the bright morning sun and the sounds of songbirds are slipping through your windows; awakening you to a new day. As springtime washes over the landscape with a rainbow of colors, consider reviving and refreshing your indoor space by sprinkling pops of color throughout your home.   A few hints to consider when adding a splash of springtime to your decor are to follow the 6:3:1 rule; room color accents should be only 10 percent of the room’s color.  Use fresh, uplifting spring colors, such as rose, pinks, lilac, light blues and green and buttercup; and, flow the colors from room to room. Also, use items that are easy, replaceable, and ideally inexpensive.

Below are five tips for using springtime pops of color to freshen up your home decor:

Add a Few Colorful Accents Pieces

• Display the unique treasures you collected on last year’s beach trip.
• Spray an old wicker piece with a coat of bright paint and add a bright seat cushion with a coordinating pillow.
• Paint an old piece of wood furniture white and then stencil springtime flowers and birds on it.
• Use fun, pastel colored accessories like vintage flower vases, umbrella holders, and other accent pieces.
• Place inexpensive hooked rugs in the hallways or porches.  These will add an element of color to the often ignored floor.

Change the Wall or Ceiling Art

Add a focal point of color to a room by hanging a new colorful painting, placing decorative pottery along empty bookshelves or suspending colorful medallions from the ceiling.   Or, create a stunning eye catcher by covering several frames with bright springtime fabric, or framing wallpaper and hanging it over an ordinary couch.

Brighten Up Your Bedding

Give your bedroom a simple spring makeover with the addition of a new lightweight, dazzling bed cover with colorful, coordinating throw pillows and blankets.   If you want to take it one step further, consider making a matching slipcover for a large, comfortable sitting chair placed in the corner of the bedroom or a new set of matching curtains.

Spruce up the Lampshades

To quickly add a dash of color to any room, buy colorful lamp shades for your table or floor lamps.   Or get more creative and give your lampshade a springtime look with a custom fabric cover.  And, in both cases, coordinate the lampshades with a matching lilac scented candle.

Bring the Outdoors Inside

Breathe life into your home and mark the beginning of spring with few fresh house plants, vases of fresh cut flowers, like lilies, tulips and orchids and hanging baskets full of colorful flowers.  And, don’t forget to open your windows to add light and warmth to your home on those special warm afternoons.
