hike around rouge river

As the snow melts and the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to take a hike! Hiking boasts all of the classic health benefits you get from most cardio exercises. It regulates blood pressure, reduces your risk of heart disease, decreases cholesterol, and helps keep you in shape. Not to mention all of the mental health benefits too. Luckily, there’s no shortage of fantastic trails to hike around the Rouge River this spring! Here are a few of our favourites:

The Rouge Valley Trail

Construction of the Rouge Valley Trail started in 2013. Three out of four phases have been completed, while construction of the fourth phase is currently underway. Located in the heart of Unionville, the Rouge Valley Trail follows the Rouge River along Toogood Pond and connects to Milne Conservation Park. If you’re up for a challenge, you’ll love this 15km trail that takes you through several communities, parks, and destinations – with even more to come!

Rouge Valley Forest Therapy Trail

The Rouge Valley Forest Therapy Trail has it all! This 7.2-kilometre trail is free from safety hazards like dead trees and broken branches. It has a beautiful section of forest, meadow, and flowing water; a wide diversity of plant species and coniferous trees along with access to toilets and parking; and a relatively flat grade making it accessible for hikers of all levels. It’s no surprise that this trail is the first to be officially designated as a Shinrin Yoku/ Forest Therapy Trail in Canada!

Woodlands Trail

The Woodlands Trail is the perfect place to spot wildlife, test your wildflower knowledge, or take a weekend stroll! This relatively easy trail showcases a new growth forest, meadow, and the river valleys’ steep bluffs. Plus, it’s only 2.7 km long. This beginner-friendly trail is flat and wheelchair and stroller accessible for 1.5 km. It’s a great way to see the forest and meadow areas, the Little Rouge Creek, and lots of cute creatures along the way.

Cedar Trail

Are you looking for a little challenge? The Cedar Trail is only 2.2 km long, but it has some steep grades and sections that will help you get your workout in. However, this hike will be worth it! You’ll get to see small streams, the Little Rouge Creek, and wetland and meadow areas on your way.

The Vista Trail

Located just outside the Rouge Valley Conservation Centre is the Vista trail. This 1.5km loop allows you to see the beautiful bluffs, Little Rouge Creek, and the Rouge River valley. Once again, it has some steep grades and sections that will give you that extra challenge!
